Éire Budgerigar Society

As we head towards summer, members of the Éire Budgerigar Society are getting excited and motivated for a number of reasons, about the upcoming show season. Following on from a suggestion by club member James Sidney to make the club’s first show of the season, their “Young Stock Show”, part of his local “Gathering Festival”, the club now finds its self once again, leading by example and  taking brave new steps  to promote, and advance the hobby of the “Exhibition Budgerigar” in Ireland.

The “Gathering Festival”, is a national festival, and it is aimed at inviting Irish people, who are spread throughout the world to come home to Ireland during 2013. With this in the back of his mind, James secured for the club the truly superb, “98 Centre” in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.

The show will take place on the weekend of 9th June and will be part of this major festival and celebration of Irish culture, history and heritage. Tens of thousands of people will be flocking to Enniscorthy that weekend, and the members of the Éire B.S. will be on hand to raise the profile of both their society, and the hobby of bird keeping in general.

The show will receive extensive media attention from both print and broadcast media, and so much work has been done by James and his family in the back ground, that he even has organised the Mayor of Enniscorthy to present specially commissioned awards at the show.

This year the committee of the Éire B.S have introduced a computerised point allocation system into their Show Management Software. This is being introduced to award those exhibitors, who make the effort and get as many of their birds to the show bench as possible.  All exhibits which are placed in the first seven class places will be awarded points, ranging from 12 points for first place down to 2 points for seventh place. So the exhibitor who wins the accolade of “Best Exhibitor” may not have won any individual major award, but will now be recognised for their effort. The point totals will be carried forward to the Open show in September and the Swords show next October, where an overall winner will be announced. There will, in addition to trophies, be generous cash prizes for the winners of each section. So dust of your cages now!

Once again the Éire B.S, with their fresh and forward thinking have seized the initiative and brought their birds around the country in an effort, to promote the hobby of the “Exhibition Budgerigar”.

Our guests of honour will be our judge Ian Fielding, and his wife Pat, from Merseyside inEngland. Members will join Ian and Pat on Saturday night the 8th June inTracy’s Hotel, Enniscorthy, for what can best be described as “Lots of Craic”!

Terry Tuxford About the Author:

Terry Tuxford first began breeding budgerigars in 1979 and joined the BS in 1980. He was elevated to Champion in 1985 when he went into partnership with Brian Poole. This partnership is probably one of the longest existing partnerships in the UK hobby today having lasted some 27 years so far and is still going strong. Terry and Brian are also partnered by Yvonne Tuxford who joined the BS in 1990.

Terry demonstrated his penmanship early in his budgerigar career and wrote in the second edition of Budgerigar World. Little did he realise then that in just over 8 year’s time he would become editor following a 20 month apprenticeship with founding editor, Gerald Binks. Terry went on to edit a total of 245 editions up to May 2011.

In 1993 Terry took his Budgerigar Society Judges final examination and was awarded Subsidiary Judge of the Year and has gone on to judge the Budgerigar Society World Show on three occasions as well as many top shows at home and abroad. He is also an accomplished speaker and has been a guest at societies throughout the UK as well as Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and many other European countries.
