Following a meeting of the Budgerigar Society General Council on 28 September, new officers were duly elected in the wake of the resignations of the former Chairman and Vice Chairman.
President and acting Chairman, Maurice Roberts was the sole candidate to be put forward for the role of Chairman. His nomination was backed by all in attendance and duly accepted. Maurice has served on the GC for a number of years, is a panel judge and is one of the most admired and respected individuals in the world of exhibition budgerigars.
Maurice commented, “I am both honoured and humbled to accept the office of Chairman. When I started in the hobby as a boy, I could never have conceived that I would one day hold the two highest offices within the Society, let alone both in the same year.”
Moving on from the unfortunate events of the last month or so, the Society is now ready to look to the future. Maurice asked for all members to, “Reflect on why we are involved with our much loved and unique hobby and how truly blessed we are to have had our lives touched by the fabulous creatures known to us as budgerigars.”
The nomination for Vice Chairman saw the former Chairman, Grant Findlay being put forward as the sole candidate to take the reigns of Dave Hislop. As with the vote for the role of Chairman, Grant received the unanimous support of the General Council as further testament to the calibre of the two men who now act as custodians of the Society.
Reflecting on his appointment, Grant stated, “I am delighted to accept the nomination for Vice Chair and look forward to working with Maurice in order to provide him with as much support as possible in what can prove to be a very challenging position.”
The Editorial of the Society bi-monthly magazine “The Budgerigar” will be conducted by George Booth for the next two editions following his kind offer to continue in this capacity until the position is reviewed by the Board of the General Council.
Meanwhile, Dave Whittaker announced he would be stepping down as Secretary of the Society effective from the end of March 2013. Dave has served the Society as secretary since 1994.
The General Council will discuss the various options surrounding the role of Secretary in the near future.
